Why the Western media report negatively about Africa.

How many times as an African have you watched a Western television report about your country, shaken your head in disgust and exclaimed ‘But my country is definitely more than that its not just slums why can’t they show the positive as well?,how many times have you had the same feeling after reading about your in newspaper or magazine? Well there are many reasons explaining why the Western media chose to report Africa in such negative tones.
Two things stand out: First, Africa has become a comfort zone used by the West to calm down its masses. If the Western media shows the Zimbabwean capital Harare in full flower, the West’s comfort zone will whittle away as the Western masses would know that their cities are not the only nice places on earth and the so called ‘’poor’’ Africans will be seen to be not so bad after all, that would be subversive of all the West has been doing to Africa since the first European landed on our shores.
The second point is economic: Everybody is chasing the tourist dollar or foreign direct investment. The incessant negative portray of Africa in my opinion is a deliberate attempt to drive business and tourists away from the continent, Why so? You must be a masochist to want to invest your money in a hopeless continent or visit there as a tourist: on another level the negative portrayal aims at making Africans feel self-pity and loathe themselves and their heritage.
Little is said about Africa’s strategic importance to the so called industrialized nations; It’s indispensability and relevance to world development, global technology and the wealth of nations derived from involuntary African largesse, are not acclaimed by the media. The amorphous news spin is America has to protect it’s interests and national security, without access to certain raw materials from Africa, Western industrials capacity would wither much like a raisin in the sun, So whatever you thought about Africa you must think again and again but don’t expect to read such an article in the Financial Times, BBC or CNN, why? Because as the New- York times motto says, “All news fit to print ‘’ implies, there is some news not fit to print.
Please note this a personal opinion

  1. I do believe all of the ideas you’ve introduced in your post.
They are really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for newbies.
May you please prolong them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.
